Position Summary:

Associate Director, IT Business Partnering for Clinical Trial Management Capabilities is accountable for the effective delivery of IT capabilities and services supporting the R&D Clinical Operations functions. This is a senior role partnering with the heads of the Global Trial & Clinical Operations teams to define and drive digital capabilities to meet their specific strategic needs. The role is accountable to provide Drug Development IT domain leadership & strategic partnership, and to leverage the matrix to drive portfolio execution.

Success in this role requires experience in delivering key clinical trial management capabilities, such as clinical trial management systems (CTMS), planning capabilities and analytics solutions. In addition, the candidate is expected to be familiar with drug development business processes, clinical IT ecosystems, operational challenges and solutions, effective change management/ adoption strategies, stakeholder management and governance of IT portfolio from ideation to value realization.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Domain Leadership
    • Owns IT Strategy: Drives the development of an actionable multi-year strategic digital strategy and capability roadmaps, informed and prioritized by business and IT in an enterprise context. Prioritizes the portfolio appropriately and is accountable for the overall portfolio budget management.
    • Delivers Compelling Business Cases: Leads the development of strong and clear business cases for digital capability investments in support of the roadmap and aligned with the platform strategy. Defines, measures, & achieves business outcomes for highest value digital capabilities. 
    • Brings an external view: Actively maintains awareness of external drivers in the trial management business domain and relevant technology trends.
    • Committed to Excellence: Understands where BMS should be competitively differentiated through technology, translates business needs into specific business requirements, sees realistic opportunities for IT to add more value, and balances this with a pragmatic understanding of “fitness for purpose”.

  • Strategic Leadership and Influence
    • Trusted Advisor: Influences the strategic thinking of senior business leaders, and leans in to help business leaders to include future digital capabilities in clinical trial management into their planning
    • Builds Strong Partnerships: Establishes an effective working relationships with all relevant business leaders, is deeply involved with key business activities and forums, and takes full accountability for delivering the value proposition of IT.  
    • Drives Change: Enables effective planning, execution and communication of business change management to support digital capability investments and value realization. Accountable for ensuring an effective change management plan is developed and executed for individual projects.

    • Drives Alignment: Advocates the IT operating model and understands the business partner accountabilities throughout the plan/build/run cycle, and builds trusting partnerships with IT delivery teams at all levels.  
    • Advocates for value delivery: Constructively advocates for value by ensuring IT has the right balance of trade-offs between speed, quality and cost. Connects and educates the business stakeholders on the broader IT capabilities and services.
    • Communicates Effectively: Communicates successes and issues accurately, urgently, and to the right audience, and takes responsibility for resolution and management of expectations across stakeholders.
    • Acts Boldly: Leads with urgency, courage, tenacity and respect to initiate uncomfortable conversations in order to remove roadblocks to value delivery.

Desired Experience:

Required:       

  • Experience working in large and/or complex IT programs, preferably within the drug development and clinical operations R&D domain for a pharmaceutical sponsor, CRO or biotech company
  • Experience in the business processes for drug development such as study planning, study feasibility and start up, site and investigator operations management, site monitoring, site payments, study vendor oversight and study performance metrics
  • Knowledge and experience in implementing CTMS solutions
  • Experience building business cases, investment approval and measuring ROI
  • Knowledge of global regulatory landscape for clinical trials & data privacy
  • Knowledge of computer system validation processes
  • Experience of managing SaaS applications, vendor selection and contracting processes
  • Experience working as an IT business partner or a senior business analyst

Ideal Candidates Would Also Have:

  • 10+ years of experience working for a pharmaceutical sponsor, CRO or biotech company
  • Experience implementing and managing global digital solutions in clinical operations area
  • Experience implementing global change in technology and business process
  • Experience working in initiatives across multiple levels of management and organizational/ stakeholder boundaries
  • Experience working in a matrix environment
  • Experience working with senior IT/ business leaders and vendor partners

Other qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a focus on computer science or Information Technology preferred.

Executive Director, Business Development, Search & Evaluation, Hematology & Cell Therapy - Princeton, NJ

This is a leadership role within the Business Development Unit (BDU) for Hematology & Cell Therapy. The mission of the BDU is to bring external opportunities in hematology and cell therapy to augment our internal pipeline and capabilities.

The candidate will possess strong scientific expertise in the biopharmaceutical industry and business development leadership, in both hematology therapeutic area and Cell Therapy as a modality. The candidate will have the ability to think holistically and long-term across a broad spectrum of industry trends and issues in hematology, Cell Therapy, adjacent diseases and platform approaches, and to communicate long term business objectives and priorities through external partnerships. A deep understanding of the drug discovery, development, and regulatory processes is required, as the candidate will lead both scouting activities and evaluation/diligence of novel therapeutic opportunities for both licensing and M&A, while supporting transactional activities. Within BMS, the candidate is required to have strong interpersonal skills and work with multiple internal stakeholders to drive and support highly visible and time-sensitive business development projects. Furthermore, the candidate will be able to co-lead with Transactions to develop and deliver scientific, clinical, technical, and commercial assessments and evaluations in hematology and Cell Therapy field to the relevant BMS governance bodies.

Key activities

  • Lead an S&E team to identify, evaluate and diligence BD opportunities in hematology and Cell Therapy.
  • Represent the BDU as the scientific thought leader in strategic area teams and other settings
  • Demonstrate leadership and scientific rigor while collaborating closely with internal BD, Enterprise Strategy, R&D, and Commercial stakeholders and potential external partners and other sources of opportunities.
  • Lead team to conduct triaging and assessment of all inbound opportunities, and conduct deep scientific and clinical due diligence with cross-functional teams.
  • Direct team on proactive external outreach efforts to identify and initially qualify partnering or acquisition opportunities consistent with BMS BD priorities.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in balancing large book of work while ensuring consistent attention and prioritization of most critical and visible projects.
  • Serve as thought leader to formulate Cell Therapy area strategy and hematology therapeutic area strategy (e.g., focus indications, prioritized cell therapy platforms and approaches, target MOAs, potential partners, etc.) while driving the execution of external business development elements.
  • Co-lead with the Transactions and cross-functional teams to deliver assessments of technical/commercial risks and team recommendations of external opportunities for BMS governance endorsement, integrating high-level stakeholder input and senior management review.
  • Collaborate with Transaction BD colleagues and support agreement negotiation and contracting as needed.
  • Oversee Diligence Team for less complex opportunities and directly lead Diligence Team for most complex opportunities:
    • Facilitate diligence planning
    • Lead diligence interactions with external parties
    • Prepare high quality deliverables for diligence findings and recommendations
    • Coordinate with Therapeutic Area leads, Thematic Research Center heads, and BD operations team to ensure quality of all diligence output incl. governance meeting readouts
  • Lead and participate in BD external partnering events (JPM, BIO, BIO EU, BMS Partnering Days etc.) and relevant technical / scientific meetings, including preparing materials such as presentations, FAQ and related documents.
  • Manage and coach a high-performing team and cultivate future leaders in Search & Evaluation


Experience Desired

  • MD, PhD, PharmD, or other advanced degree in the biomedical field required.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience within the biopharmaceutical industry or related biotech/healthcare practice (e.g., consulting, investment banking, venture capital) and minimum 5 years  of experience in S&E in a business development organization.
  • Direct experience in both hematology and Cell Therapy preferred
  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • A proven record of leading discovery, development, or business development projects.
  • Deep scientific knowledge in the Cell Therapy as a modality and relevant therapeutic areas with understanding of the preclinical drug discovery and clinical development and approval process. 
  • Proven ability to lead multiple projects in a matrixed environment with a high degree of independence.
  • Consistently deliver on commitments in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate ideas and lead others to accomplish challenging goals and objectives.
  • Experience working with both internal and external multidisciplinary teams/customers.

MUST come from a large enterprise environment as a PL/SQL Developer.

Role Description and Objectives

Responsible for the development, tuning and troubleshooting of Oracle application code (Packages, Procedures, triggers, etc.) in cooperation with development and DBA teams

Required Qualifications
